Dalam bahasa Perancis terdapat dua gender yaitu Feminine dan Maskulin. Dua gender ini memiliki perbedaan yang sebenarnya cukup mudah untuk dipahami. Namun, memiliki beberapa pengecualian sehingga membingungkan.
• Secara General noun atau kata benda yang memiliki akhiran –e masuk kedalam feminin dengan ditandai une atau La. Dalam bahasa inggris une dapat diartikan a dan la dapat diartikan the.
a. –e : la voiture
= the car / une voiture = a car
b. –ée : l’année
= the year/ une année = a year
c. –ie : la mélodie
= the melody/ unemélodi = a melody
d. –ue : la rue
= the street / unerue = a street
e. –be : la syllable
= the syllable/ unesyllable = a syllable
f. –ette : la baguette
= the baguette / une baguette = a baguette
Walaupun begitu, ada beberapa huruf berakhiran ㅡe yang justru termasuk kedalam maskulin. Contohnya;
a. le monde = the world
b. le génie = the genius
c. le microbe = the microbe
Lalu ada beberapa huruf yang tidak berakhiran ㅡe tapi malah masuk kedalam gender feminine.
a. –on : la boisson = the drink
b. –é : l’acné = the acne
c. –té : la beauté = the beauty
d. –tié : la moitié = the half
e. –eur : la couleur = the color
• Semua kata benda yang tidak termasuk kedalam gender feminin, berarti masuk kedalam gender maskulin.
Pada umumnya kata benda maskulin tidak diakhiri dengan huruf –e & ditandai dengan un atau le.
• Contoh :
a. le bain
= the bath/ un bain = a bath
b. le parfum
= the perfume/ un parfum = a perfume
c. le soleil
= the sun/ un solei = a sun
d. l’estomac
= the stomach/ un estomac = a stomach
e. le soda
= the coke/ un soda = a coke
• Ada juga pengecualian didalam kata benda maskulin yang memiliki akhiran –e sehingga masuk ke feminine, misal :
a. le collège = the school
b. le miracle = the miracle
c. le puzzle = the puzzle
d. le beurre = the butter
e. l’hélicoptére = the helicpoter
