Fine Gael are using clever PR stunts like this to look like they’re doing something because they know that climate change will be the big issue of the next general election. Meanwhile, they’re pandering to corporate oil and gas lobbyists by blocking the Climate Emergency Bill with dirty and possibly unconstitutional tactics.
But if Fine Gael can have a clever plan, then so can we! Their rivals, Fianna Fáil, could unblock this bill in tomorrow’s committee meeting. That’s because the Ceann Comhairle from Fianna Fáil can remove the ‘money order’ Fine Gael is using as a bill blocker.
If we can convince Fianna Fáil that unblocking this bill and showing up Fine Gael’s dirty trick is the most popular thing to do - there’s a pretty great chance they’ll do it ahead of a looming general election. Especially because they’ll want to maintain their new lead in the polls.
The problem is the same oil and gas lobbyists will be trying to influence Fianna Fáil too, so we have to make it easy for them to back us. If we flood Fianna Fáil leader, Micháel Martin, and Ceann Comhairle, Seán O’ Fearghaíl, with emails and calls today - we’ve got a really great chance of making this happen. We did it before when they were wavering and we rang in our hundreds and convinced them to back the bill in the Dáil.
