The road to success is never a straight path, which I know first hand. I consider my college experience to be very different from my peers. When most of my friends were more engaged in their social lives, I was juggling multiple jobs and internships to focus on my academic and future career. Sacrificing a social life in order to get ahead in life is a step I have taken to create my legacy as an aspiring journalist.

Journalism has been on my horizon since my freshman year of high school. I was a writer for the school newspaper and seeing my first article published was the fuel to the fire that sparked my passion of becoming a journalist. I saw it as an opportunity to go places that only a select few could go to. Throughout my college experience, I have completed five internships that have sharpened my reporting, editing and interviewing skills. In the fall, I will be interning on the Assignment Desk at NY1. Upon graduation, it is my goal to become a reporter for a major media outlet. I will be successful in this goal because of the skills I have gained from my opportunities in the field.

I am grateful for the aid that St. John's has given me thus far, but I still face a financial burden. I am applying for this scholarship because it will help me afford basic necessities such as food and transportation while I pursue an unpaid academic internship in the fall semester. The journalism industry is a competitive field and I am thankful for the opportunity to land an internship at a station in the #1 market. However, I am now responsible for my expenses as a senior because my mother is unable to contribute to my education anymore.
