Once a cat like this walked right up to me in a parking lot. He was all scabby and stuff but was so friendly I knew he was lost. I was a kid at the time so I promised the cat that once my parents came over I'd make sure to get him some food and help. Well my parents were in a hurry to take us all to Thanksgiving dinner so they told me to forget about the cat, but the whole time at dinner I couldn't stop feeling horrible that I had all this food and was somewhere warm, and I made a promise to the cat I didn't follow through on. https://workingfordream.blogspot.com/2019/08/floridians-told-to-load-up-on-supplies.html It was so cold that night I thought the cat could die. My parents ended up being really heroic in deciding to go back and find the cat, give him some turkey, and bring him to a vet. Street cats can be born and raised on the streets, yet surprisingly friendly. "Feral" is not the only other possibility apart from lost or abandoned. There are millions of friendly strays all over the world, who were born on the streets but are acclimated to people because they live in cities and encounter the occasional (or frequent, in some regions) friendly human. https://www.reddit.com/user/vikobafah/comments/cx5otp/floridians_told_to_load_up_on_supplies/ Entire organisations exist that feed and provide medical treatment for stray colonies, and many cats who emerge from these colonies do enjoy human interaction, though they belong to no one and never have. I participate in cat rescue and TNR, and am speaking from abundant experience. It is quite frustrating that Reddit meets every video or story about a friendly stray with certain claims of either abandonment or loss. Strays are greatly misunderstood. Is it possible that Winston was lost? Sure, but it is far from certain.We found our Mary on Christmas Eve at my grandma's house. We put her in the car, letting run so she could warm up (my grandma's husband wasn't a cat person, to say the least, so bringing her in was out of the question) and brought her some Turkey. We left a little early so we could get her home, inside and safe. Vets best estimate put her at 4 or 5 years old.

She never complained once. When we have company she goes from lap to lap all night. She doesn't get into any trouble (unless you leave food out unsupervised.) She doesn't get into anything she shouldn't, doesn't make any messes, doesn't knock things off counter tops, the sweetest most polite girl in the world.
