1. Nuclear power has a racist history in Australia and first nations people are still at risk from uranium mining. Many uranium mines and test sites are on sacred indigenous land. The idea that this country has vast "uninhabited" spaces where you can freely trash the environment with toxic nuclear tailings and uranium mines is a remnant of racist settler-colonial perceptions.

2. Wind and solar combined with storage are THREE TIMES cheaper than nuclear. The technology is ridiculously expensive.

3. A new nuclear plant will take 20+ years to build, and costs are likely to blow out as they have in US and other plants. By then we will have:
a) Already been screwed by climate change, and
b) Surpassed nuclear power efficiency even further with better renewable tech.

Also screw nuclear weapons.

and many pro-nuc in aus say it will take less than 20 years but this is based on other world averages -- nuclear would take a long time in aus because we don't have an established nuclear commercial industry
