The Hockey Sweater’s author wanted his readers to understand that you
shouldn’t take out your anger on anybody else especially if they can’t control the situation. It also doesn’t matter how you look, it’s how you perform, if you do your best, everyone can be satisfied.
Another theme of "The Interlopers" is the dominance of nature over man. Although the von Gradwitz and Znaeym families have been feuding for generations over a narrow strip of forest, nature triumphs over both. Thus, the two men are the true interlopers in a domain that cannot actually be controlled by any man.
A main theme in the Hockey Sweater also seen in this short story is Sports idolatry. The main protagonist explains that the whole town looks up to Maurice "Rocket" Richard and the Montreal Canadiens team. They do everything they can to copy and be like their favourite hockey player and team.
