Good afternoon, it is my pleasure to have been invited here today to speak on behalf of Jefferson-Horton Post #340. My name is Patricia Johnson and I am the grand daughter of Van Horton, one of the namesakes of the Post. I will be giving a short version of the history of our Post and the long way we have come since it's inception.

I will begin by saying my grandfather was a World War 1 war hero. He was apart of Company E, 366th Infantry Regiment, 92nd Division, which was a famous black Infantry division. At that time whites and blacks served in segregated divisions, both in World War I and World War II. The official report states the black troops were fighting under the command of the French. Among those in the line of fire were Horton and other members of Company E. After Horton's sergeant and four other men in his combat group were killed, he fearlessly charged about 20 enemy soldiers who were brandishing liquid fire. This single-handed effort stopped the flamethrower attack and drove back the enemy. After those heroic actions, Horton went on fight several other battles.
