Victor receives a letter saying that his youngest brother, William, has been murdered. It was said that he was strangled (he was found with finger prints around his neck) after he disappeared from his family, but before he did Elizabeth gives him a locket with Caroline's (the dead mother) picture in it. When he is found the locket his gone. This causes Elizabeth to feel guilty because she believes he was murdered for it. Henry Clerval helps him prepare to go to Geneva. The gate is locked when he arrives, so Victor goes to the place where his brother was murdered. While there (and in between lightning flashes), Victor sees a figure that resembles his monster. He realizes that it was his monster that killed William. He doesn’t tell anyone this thought, in fear of being seen as mad and that no one will believe him. When he gets home he is told by Ernst (his brother) that Justine Moritz (Frankenstein family housekeeper) is accused of William’s death because she is found with the locket. Victor denies that it was her (he doesn’t tell them why), and the rest of the family (especially Elizabeth) agree with him, but there is still a trail for her.
