Phenomenon #1:
Reason why summer is warmer and days are longer and in winter, days are shorter and colder is due to fact that Earth's axis of rotation is tilted at 23.5 degrees.
Earth rotates and revolves around sun, different parts of world are aligned towards the sun during different times of the year.
During summertime, sun's rays hit Earth at steeper angle, focusing rays on
specific area and making that area warmer.
Longer daylight hours allow Earth to produce warmer temperatures since more sun rays are diretly hitting the Earth's surface, results in longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures all around.
In winter, Earth is tilted away from sun in Northern Hemisphere, this causes the sun rising lower in the sky producing shorter days and much cooler temperatures.
Phenomenon #2:
Reason why first day of summer isn't the hottest day of summer is because water takes a longer time to heat up than land.
New Jersey is close to the ocean, so seasonal lag is different, which slows down he heating and cooling process.
Water has higher heat capacity than land, heat capacity is the amount of heat that is added or removed from something to change its temperature.
