A: Well, I would say I’m very known. I viewed as a person who helped the mental illness community. I was working as a Sunday school teacher in a women's prison in 1841. I realized that prisoners did not have access to heat and suffered the cold. I further examined the conditions the prisoners were facing and I felt appalled. Some prisoners had a mental illness and they were the one's most suffering.
Q: What motivated you to work?
A: The thing that motivated me to work was the fact that people with a mental illness received poor treatment. People with mental illness were kept in a dark, underground cavern. They are not animals but are people who have had a really bad experience in the past. For example, people can be suffering from PTSD, which was very common at the time, and not function properly throughout the day. There are also other illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and much more. These people needed serious help or their well-being will become even worse.
Q: Were you afraid of the consequences you could have received?
A: Of course I was afraid, I was a woman. Many people, especially men, will look down at me and disagree with what I have to say. I also was talking about a pretty sensitive topic and people who had a mental illness can totally disagree with my views and will hurt my case.
Q: Did you feel you contributed more than you expected?
A: I really had only one objective in mind, help the mental illness community. I had visited a hospital called the Retreat in York, England. This was claimed to be the most advanced insane asylum and in my opinion, and it was. I wanted to implement the system that they incorporated in England to our system. I feel like full recovery could be achieved if the mentally ill were treated and cared for compassionately.
