Frederick Douglass was an American slave who escaped slavery and became an abolitionist. FD was born in Tuckahoe, near Hiss borough and approximately 12 miles from Easton in Talbot county, Maryland. FD was an American slave who later became an abolitionist and later wrote a narrative in 1845. FD's audience was whit people, mostly in the north to persuade the wicked effects of slavery, to convince the north to abolish slavery. the two positions that Douglass is focusing on in is narrative is that, slavery corrupts slave holders and slavery is terrible for slaves.
people who defended slavery argued that the sudden abolishment of slavery would have a negative impact in the south where slave labor was the foundation of the south economy. defenders of slavery claimed that slavery supported a instinctive order in civilization. many northerners believed fathers should care for their children and siblings and stand together. a common misconception of the northerners was that slavery developed the African people. Douglass argues that slavery is terrible for slaves. but Douglass wanted them to understand the damaging effects of slavery. Douglass evidence disproves the position of those who defended slavery because it shows that slavery is terrible for slaves where as the south believed slavery civilized African people. these examples show that slavery is terrible for slaves.
