Studying medicine is not just for the smart, but for people who persevere. Studying medicine should not be a matter of a big paycheck, but of finding meaning in providing optimal health care. I am in my first year of nursing, and I have wanted to be a doctor ever since my sister was born. She is 5 years old, globally delayed, and has special needs.I witnessed my family pay for her weekly therapy sessions and countless trips to expensive doctors, and that made me think that if I specialize in that area, then I can gain a better understanding about my sister's condition and care for my sister the best I can as she grows up. I grew up in a middle class family in the province of Nueva Ecija. I have lead a simple yet beautiful life so far, and in this process of growth I have had my family support me in everyway that they can. I am truly grateful for everything, but of course there are two sides of this coin. As much as their support and love lifts me up, their expectations and hopes weigh me down. There are many nights where my anxiety floods my head with thoughts like, "what if i end up unemployed, who will help my parents pay for my brother's education?". Not only that, I also always worry about my youngest sister. I worry about her future, and I always pray for her to get better because she can't interact with people like kids her age. And the answer to all my anxieties is always this: just study hard and focus on the present. So now I'm worrying about my present which is pre-med. Because the thing is, medicine related courses require not only intelligence, but discipline and work ethic. This might sound like big talk, coming from just a frist year student, but I know people who are testaments to what I'm saying. My best friend's sister is a doctor. She has just graduated from UST med school. Before that, her sister was an average student, and nobody saw it coming when she pursued med school. I would always sleep over at their house, and my best friend and her sister sleeps in the same room so I witnessed first-hand at how hard and how thouroughly she studies. Stacks of handouts and books are on the floor. Her undereyes have very dark bags, and her skin is breaking out with acne. Usually she hasn't eaten and she's either holed up in her room or doing rounds in the hospital. She also goes to volunteer to remote places so she misses a lot of birthdays and special occassions. All of this for what? That coveted MD at the end of her name. My best friend never said it directly, but I know that she admires her sister so much for being so strong and persistent. And I too, was inspired by her, that dreaming of becoming a doctor is not just because you are smart, but because you worked hard to be there. I have also met people who aspire to be a doctor not because they really want to, but for the big paycheck, and the status that comes with the profession. It isn't my business to judge them, or lecture them, but i think it is notable to be critical and informed in a career path that we will partake in. Sure, it is a practical way of looking at it especially in our country, but let us think more about the process of obtaining our MD goal and let us find a deeper meaning in aspiring to be a doctor. If one only thinks about the money and status, then there is a big chance for burnout. The medical profession is intrinsically stressful and demanding. There is no shame in wanting a big salary, but a 2011 PNU study suggests that these demands and pressures in medical school appear to leave many medical students at risk of stress and burnout. Some will be able to handle the demands and pressure while some of them cannot continue on even after just their first year of med school. This phenomenon of stress and burnout in medical students could lead to poor academic performance, suboptimal patient care and decreased personal health and well-being. Before we get a chance to take care of our patient, we must first re-assess our purpose in choosing our careers and what truly drives us. A 2015 study regarding life satisfaction of adolescent Filipinos state that realization that life is meaningful is associated with increased levels of life satisfaction. This signifies that when adolescents realize a deeper purpose, it is more
likely that they will be satisfied with their lives. Thinking only about money and status in pursuing the medical field will not be a strong foundation to actually achieve your goal. So I think before we choose our career, we must not let the opinion and expectation of others push us to professions that is not for us. We must look into ourselves and evaluate what our skills are, what we love to learn, what we can contribute and start from there. I cannot say to pursue your passion, that would not be fair, given that not everyone has the resources to do so. But If we can realize a value in what we are doing, almost anything can bring happiness and success. No amount of money can bring back missed birthdays and hours of sleep deprivation. And no amount of money can truly make you happy if what you are doing is not what you want to do. I have honestly watched so many ted talks as support for this speech, and the thing that i learned is that everybody has a different journey, and just because someone is successful in a specific career does not mean that that should also be your path. It's okay to fail. Be more concerned of not failing because that means you're just sitting there idly and doing nothing that challenges you. Stop searching for a sure answer, and take every opporrtunity peresented to you. I'm in this process myself, and I just go with my love for learning, and taking the opportunities with it. And hopefully, I may find a deeper purpose in my chosen degree and career path. I hope you do too.

Not surprisingly, stress
related to financial strain and uncertainty has a negative impact on
student well-being. Students’ financial stress is associated with higher self-reported mental health
needs, difficulties in college
adjustment, and a range of adverse behaviors, social relations, and academic outcomes
