Psikologi merupakan ilmu yg mempelajari tingkah laku manusia, ilmu ini termasuk dalam kategori science dan juga social. Termasuk science karna kita belajar secara ilmiah, sedangkan sosial karena ilmu ini berkaitan dengan perilaku manusia yang bisa pelajari dalam ilmu sosial. Kebanyakan orang mengira kalau psikologi hanya mempelajari tentang 'kejiwaan', memang benar psikologi berkaitan erat dengan kejiwaan. Tetapi kita juga mempelajari fisiologi manusia (seperti anatomi, genetika) dan neurobiologis yg mendasari perilaku manusia. Bahkan kita juga belajar ilmu sosial seperti filsafat, sosiologi, antropologi dan kriminologi. Para praktisi dalam bidang ini disebut psikolog.
Menurut asal katanya, psikologi berasal dari bahasa Yunani Kuno : "ψυχή" ( Psychē yang berarti jiwa) dan "-λογία" (-logia yang artinya ilmu). Sehingga secara etimologis , psikologi dapat diartikan dengan ilmu yang mempelajari tentang jiwa.

ψ diambil dari huruf yunani ke-23 berbunyi 'psi' cukup untuk mewakilkan kata psikologi. biasanya trisula ini berwarna ungu, kenapa? karena ungu merupakan aura untuk para indigo mereka yg mempunyai kekuatan magis, nah jangan salah psikologi tidak berkaitan dengan magis. melainkan mewakili untuk ilmu yg berkaitan dengan jiwa.
