I voluntarily inducted in the U.S. Army in Fresno, Ca on March 29, 1970. College was not an option due to financial constraints. My parents, siblings and I were farm laborers in the Central Valley. I went to basic training in Ft. Ord, Ca followed by six months military police training in Ft. Gordon, Georgia. After a thirty day leave, I was deployed to Long Binh, Vietnam, serving from January 1, 1971 to December 20, 1971. The remainder of my service was at the Presidio, San Francisco and I was honorably discharged on April 18, 1974. Due to stressful situations in Vietnam and during statewide duty, I was diagnosed with PTSD and receive a 60% compensation.
My wife and I bought our first home in Fresno through Cal-vet in 1987 and had two children. We sold that home in 1994 and bought our second home through Cal-vet. We separated and divorced in 1998 and subsequently lost the home in 2000 due to divorce and change in income. Due to circumstances, I have been renting rooms or living with friends for the past twenty years.
In summary, I have worked hard all my life since age six. I have a strong work ethic and will go above and beyond to get the job done. I exercise daily, am physically fit and continue to work at age 67.
I feel this program could be very beneficial to me. To be able to have my own home would be a dream come true and an answer to my prayers.
