In film studies, sound is a prominent part of film studies as it needs be paired with the visual of film itself in order to produce a movie with meanings for aesthetics of sound (Bordwell and Thompson 183). Sound has a vital role in creation of meanings and bringing best experiences to audiences. Sound is always present in the film, even though silence is a form of sound itself. Most silent films are focused in scenes more than sounds, but they need slow, speech and song with soft tone with accompany the flow in films. People assumed that sound is a basis component in cinema, which produce appropriate noise for audience other than man-made voice. In film making process, soundtrack produced separately as they are not dependant on the content of movie, producers or marketers use sound to attract viewer’s attention (Bordwell and Thompson 103). Soundtrack could capture audience’s attention by stimulating mood of audience with their music rhythm and tone, which makes the movie easier to remember and recall what they perceived in the movie. Music and voice can set an atmosphere so audiences will be curious and predict the storyline of films. In the other hand, sound may not necessarily be natural, it can be made from computer which is called FX effect. In our interpretation, we treat sound in film as speech, music and noise (Bordwell and Thompson 186). All types of sounds should be made perfectly for people to understand the content of film. In this essay, 3 movies that we watched in class will be chosen analysed in this essay, which is Cinema Paradiso, In the Mood for Love and The Sixth Sense will be analysed in terms of sound.
