Unit 5 Lesson 2
Appraisal- An expert's determination of the value of a piece of property.
•Claim - The request made to an insurance company to repay the policyholder for a loss.
•Insurance - allows you to limit potential financial losses from illness, injury, or damage to property, to amounts you can handle.
•Property Insurance - protects things that you own like your car, home, and valuables.
•Liability Insurance - protects you from losses that you cause others; it will pay the cost of damage, medical expenses, and legal fees if you are sued, up to a maximum.
•Personal Insurance - protects you, your spouse, and your children against financial loss due to illness, disability, or death.
•Policy - A legal contract to purchase insurance.
•Policy Holder - The person who signs the contract with the insurance company.
•Premium - The payments made to an insurance company in exchange for protection from risk.

•To manage risk, you can buy insurance. In exchange for this protection, you make a regular payment to an insurance company called a premium.

•When you buy insurance, you sign a legal contract called a policy; thus you become a policyholder.

•Different policies protect you from different types of loss for varying amounts of coverage. If you do have a loss, covered by the policy, you file a claim, which is a formal request for payment from the insurance company.

•The insurance company diversifies the risk by selling policies to thousands of people, with each policy having a premium that is substantially less than the cost of the possible loss.

•Insurance operates under the concept of shared risk. It works by transferring funds from a large group to the relatively few who suffer losses. The insurance company is the middleman, collecting premiums and paying claims. They make money if they collect more in premiums than they pay out in claims. Through this method, all policyholders share the cost of losses and no single policyholder must bear the burden of a financially devastating loss
