Year - 1846
Main Idea - Outlaws slavery in any territory acquired from the War with Mexico
Why - Occurred to neutralize the dispute between the North and the South of whether or not there was going to be slavery on the new land won from Mexico
The Compromise of 1850
Year - 1850
Main Idea - Admits California as a free state and slave trade would be abolished in Washington DC. Also, Congress would not pass laws regarding slaves for the rest of the territories won from Mexico. Congress would also pass a stronger law to help slaveholders recapture slaves
Why - This was the first time there was an unbalance of power between the sections of North and South.
The Fugitive Slave Act
Year - 1850
Main Idea - People accused of being fugitives could be held without an arrest warrant. They also had no right to a trial. It placed fines on people who wouldn't cooperate and jail terms on people who helped them escape.
Why - It was part of the Compromise of 1850
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
Year - 1854
Main Idea - Nebraska would be divided into two states, Kansas and Nebraska
Why - To try and stop the bloodshed between the North and South over slavery
Lincoln & Douglas Debate
Year - 1858
Main Idea - Debates between who is going to become the next president, mainly concerning slavery into new territories
Why - To show the future of slavery, and to help the US become a better nation
John Brown
Year - 1859
Main Idea - Wanted to inspire the blacks to fight for their own freedom
Why - The North, along with John Brown, thought it was unfair to slaves, for being treated so harshly
The Election of 1860
Year - 1860
Main Idea - Debates between other candidates on the fact of slavery
Why - So that the slaves could be stopped being treated unfairly and receive compensation for their hard work
The South Secedes
Year - 1860
Main Idea - The states in the south including South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Lousiana, Texas, all seceded from the United States of America
Why - They didn't trust Abraham Lincoln and didn't like the fact that their way of life was going to be changed
