Anne gets a diary @13 & has a bday party.
Anne wants to keep a diary b/c she’s lonely. She does have friends (and admirers) but no one she can confide in."Kitty" will be just that friend.
They all lived in Frankfurt, Germany until Anne was 4. The whole family moved to Holland bc things were bad for Jews.
Anne describes how family members still living in Germany have also fled.
Anne says life's been hard since 1940 when the Germans moved into Holland. There are lots of laws restricting Jews: they have to wear a yellow star, can’t drive cars or bikes, can only go shopping during certain hours of the day, have a nighttime curfew, can’t get entertainment, etc.
It's hot and Anne wishes she was allowed to ride on public transportation, but no Jews allowed.
An older boy (16) named "Hello" Silberberg begins walking Anne to school and Anne expects he will "from now on."
Anne is getting to know Hello a bit better.
Hello visits Anne and takes her for a walk. Pim is angry when Hello returns her at ten minutes after eight because it is illegal for Jews to be out after 8 p.m.
While Anne is out walking with Hello, she sees the love of her life, Peter Schiff, who says "hello".
Anne graduates to the next grade level in school. She turns out to be a pretty average student—she’s got mostly Bs, C’s and D’s. Margo's better.
Pim says they may go into hiding soon. This is the first time Anne has heard about it, but he reminds her that they have been sending furniture into safekeeping for a year. He says they need to go into hiding or else be hauled off by the Germans.
Margot gets a call-up and they prepare to leave.
That night, the family sends clothes and books with Miep and Jan Gies to bring to the secret hiding spot.
Pim says they had to leave early because of Margot’s call-up. They’ll be hiding in her dad’s office building.
Anne describes their arrival at the "Secret Annex." Their rooms are crammed full of boxes and all of their stuff.
While Margot and Mrs. Frank rest, Anne and her dad clean the place up and improve the blackout curtains.
Nobody but Anne loves the sound of the Westertoren clock, which signals every quarter of an hour. To Anne, it feels like a faithful friend.
Anne thinks they have the most comfortable hiding place in all of Holland but is scared.
Anne describes the silence of the hiding place as oppressive and wants the van Daans to come so she won't be lonely.
Anne’s having a hard time being alone with her family. They pick on her, not Margot.
The family thinks it’s so nice to have the four of them all together, but Anne thinks she doesn’t fit in with them.
Anne misses Moortje.
The van Daans & Mouschi arrive on July 13th.
Anne describes Peter as a shy, gawky, soft boy of 16. She doesn’t think she can expect much from him in terms of friendship.
Mr. van Daan tells the story about how he fooled the Franks’ upstairs neighbors and led them to believe that the Franks had escaped into Switzerland. He told the neighbors not to breathe a word about it to anyone. Of course, they told everyone.
The Annex is hidden with a bookcase.
Mr. van Daan treats Anne like a baby, which really bothers her.
When 7 people are cramped into a small space, they stop getting along quickly.
Mrs. van Daan is unbearable.
Anne begins home school. She’s trying to learn French, and she’s helping her dad improve his Dutch.
Anne is discussed by the parents and everybody decides she is a complete "ignoramus," so she tries to study harder.
Mrs. van Daan wants to see Kitty.
Pim writes a letter to a man who had hidden some things for the Franks. They insert it in an envelope that came from southern Zealand, so that it looks like the Franks are out of the country.
Anne and her mother have a fight and Anne cries. The 3 aren't getting along.
Mrs. van Daan keeps hiding more of her things and being all moody. She likes to criticize Anne and talk about how poorly Anne is being raised.
More fussing and fighting between the adults. Anne believes she is often the subject of discussion—especially about how badly she is being raised.
Anne is tired of being frequently criticized, am I THAT BAD.
Everybody is scared at a sudden ringing of the doorbell at 8 p.m., an usual time for someone to come calling at a business office. It turns out to be nothing.
They celebrate Mrs. van Daan’s bday.
Another argument erupts between Anne and her mother, her mom starts harping on all of Anne’s faults. This makes both cry, but for different reasons.
Anne likes Pim more than mom. He wishes Anne would help her mother more, but Anne refuses.
Anne gets to read adulter books. She wants to be grown up.
Anne writes an entry imagining that she’s in Switzerland and her father gives her money to buy whatever she wants (clothes, makeup, soap, books)
Anne gets some news from the radio and Miep.
The Gestapo treat Jewish people cruelly. Ppl get gassed.
Anne is busy with schoolwork... but avoiding math.
Anne, Margot, and their mom are all friends again. Anne and Margot decide to let each other read portions of each their diaries. #amipretty
Nobody warns em that somebody is coming to refill the fire extinguishers. Everybody hears banging from the carpenter but it's just Mr. Kleiman. Whew!
On Monday, Miep and Jan Gies had a slumber party with the Annex.
Pim's sick.
Anne is allowed to read more grown-up books lately, and in German too, but she aint pious.
Bep stays the night in the Annex for fun.
Anne wants her .
Anne isn’t getting along with Margot again. Things are going a bit better with her mom, but not that great.
The British have had some success on the war front in Africa lately.
Peter turns 16.
Mr. van Daan announces that the British have landed in many countries. Everybody is saying this is the beginning of the end, but Mr. Churchill says that it is "the end of the beginning."
While lugging a sack of beans upstairs, Peter accidentally splits one.
Pim recovers.
The Annex invites an elderly Jew dentist, Alfred Dussel, and though he's glad, he sure takes awhile.
He's shocked to see the Franks. He believed the story.
The van Daans give him a copy of the "Prospectus and Guide to the Secret Annex" like a brochure, the van Daans do have humor!
Mr. Dussel becomes Anne’s roommate, ha SLOW
He recounts the atrocities, and Anne realizes they were unexposed.
Anne is guilty bc she is warm and protected.
Miep hides bad news from the sentimental women.
Anne feels like she can’t be happy when so many people in the world are suffering.
Anne feels lonely, and Pim is not everything. She misses her friends.
They overused electricity, sux for 2 wks!
Mrs. van Daan is not enough!?! Mr. Dussel nags TOO!
Anne wishes she could behave differently.
The Annex celebrates holidays w/ lil gifts.
Mr. van Daan proves his usefulness when they get a lot of meat and he turns it into sausage, which apparently also preserves it.
Mrs. van Daan thinks she broke a rib.
Mr. Dussel plays dentist and tries to fix Mrs. van Daan’s teeth, but the woman is a terrible patient.
Anne says he's a quack.
Anne sees ppl pass.
The Annex gets extra butter for Xmas.
Anne wishes Mrs. van Daan got better so she could work.
Anne can’t stand "His Lordship," who shushes her in the middle of the night when she rolls over, wtf he makes a racket on Sunday dawns.
The Annex packages gravy to help out.
They're selfish thinking of luxuries "after the war."
Anne's mad @ criticism and misunderstandings. She often cries herself to sleep and tries to be good.
Anne is constantly compared to Margot and she detests it. She does not want to be like Margot at all, who's too passive.
They constantly bicker.
Peter's dumb, RSVP lol.
The office building w/ the Annex gets sold. The new owner and an architect come to check out the building and Mr. Kleiman pretends he’s forgotten the key to the Annex part.
Mrs. van Daan gets the nickname "Mrs. Beaverbrook," after a radio man who has the same political opinions as her.
Everybody is frightened by the war planes and machine guns at night and Anne often sleeps w/ Pim.
Mrs. van Daan hears rats, not burglars. One bites Peter.
Anne describes "Boche," the downstairs office cat, nicknamed after the Germans because he is always instigating fights.
They're sick of beans.
Topics of Anne’s writing for the day: air raids, cigarette shortages, canned food, and Anne’s shoes are too small.
Pim says Anne's a barber!
Turkey is in the war, jk not yet aw.
500 and 1000 guilder notes became invalid.
Mr. Dussel breaks the rules and sends letters.
Hitler's balderdash plays on radio.
A burglar breaks into the office and the Franks, van Daans, and Mr. Dussel wait in horrible suspense, afraid for their lives.
In the morning, the men go downstairs to check it out and it turns out they are quite safe.
Germans treat Jews worse than animals. It makes her sick.
All of the Secret Annex’s "protectors" are sick in one way or another.
Pim is nervous about some important business-related talks going on downstairs, so they listen in.
Anne’s mother wants to say prayers with Anne, but she refuses. Now she’s in trouble for making her mother feel bad. But Anne can’t love her mom bc she's cold.
Anne realizes her behavior bothers her; she cried half the night.
Anne won't apologize.
Everyone is angry with everyone else and the "protectors" are still sick.
The food situation is getting worse.
It’s Dussel's birthday and he acts childish and excited.
He's selfish& hoards the food, what an ingrate. 0 generosity.
Martial law has been declared in Holland.
The Annex is paradise, but everything's dirty & old. Will they recover?
War:
Mr. Daan: won’t end until the end of 1943, that's pret long.
Mrs. Daan: doesn't realize false IDs are expensive.
Mr. Frank: optimistic.
Dussel: defends His Majesty and expects never to be contradicted.
Anne witnesses an air battle between German and British planes. The British have to parachute out of their burning plane.
The Annex has to burn trash in case they find out.
Youth in Holland are all being forced to join the Germans or do hard labor in Germany. Anne wonders what will become of Holland.
The guns are loud and terrifying at night. Mrs. van Daan is terrified, and, since her husband doesn’t comfort her well enough, she sleeps w/ Dussel. Lmao!
Anne turns fourteen and gets a poem from Pim.
Basically her dad acknowledges that they’ve all been a nagging pain to Anne and asks her to please put up with them. The poem shows that he sees what’s going on with her pretty well.
Anne also gets a big fat Greek and Roman mythology book, yay.
