Now, everyone believes that the monster wanted to demolish the "Scotia". When a boat didn't return to the port on the day where it was expected on says:
" It's because of the monster that the boat has sunk"

The passengers are scared to go on the ocean because the trips are becoming dangerous. The public demands that one kills the monster at all costs.

While all of this was happening, I came back from a studying trip in the badlands of Nebraska in the U.S.A . My name is Pierre Aronnax. I am a professor at the Natural history museum of Paris. After six months passed in Nebraska, i arrived at New York, around the end of March. I need to go back to France on the first days of May. I am occupied to put everything in order that I brought back from my trip: stones, plants, animals.

When I arrived at New York, everyone discussed. What is this thing that the boats encountered on their route? An island? A wreck? Impossible, it's very fast. A submarine? One can think about it; but a single man couldn't have built such a boat, we would know. Every industrial country say very high that they don't have a submarine. So what? The only response is : the monster.

I wrote a book in France about "The curious life of deep sea". For this, the american journal "New York Herald" asked me for my opinion on what happened. I'm writing an article, in the article of april the 30th. In this article I say:
" It is very difficult and near to impossible to know, what there is at the deep sea, we can't' go down there. Maybe very large animals still live in these deeps.

"A sea animal, the "Unicorn of sea", measures near 20 meters. She has a type of very pointy teeth, as strong as steel. This tooth is more than 2 meters long and 15 cm wide. A monster 5 times longer and bigger would have the size, the force, and the speed necessary to demolish a big boat or make a hole in the iron hull. Therefore I think that we can explain all that happened at sea the last month."

Because this monster is dangerous, several countries decided to hunt him down and kill him. America sends at sea a "frigate", in other words a boat with a steel hull. It's named "The Abraham Lincoln". It is armed for whaling.

The day of departure of the fregate, i received the following letter:

Mr. Aronnax, Professeur to the Museum
5th hotel avenue _ New York.
Sir if you want to come out with the "Abraham Lincoln" the government of united states would be happy to see France join at this trip. Commander Farragut kept a cabin for you.

A minute before receiving the letter from J .B Hobson I wasn't thinking of hunting the unicorn; a minute after I want at all cost to kill this monster
