Person 1: But... what exactly are tides?
Person 2: Well, that's simple, tides are the regular rising and falling (or upward and downward movement) of the ocean.
Person 1: Well... what makes them move like that? Is it the wind?
Person 2: No, not exactly. While the wind does play a small part in the process of the tides, the main cause of them is the gravitational pull between the Earth, the Earth's moon, and the sun. The moon's gravity causes the water to bulge out towards the moon on one side of the Earth and another on the other side of the Earth to be pulled towards the sun. That's why there are two different times a day because the water is being pulled in a different direction, depending on the time. It's quite fascinating really!

Person 1: Are there different types of tides?
Person 2: It's funny you should ask, I was just getting to that part! A tide that occurs right after a new or full moon is called a spring tide! The spring tide occurs when the sun and moon align and their gravities are pretty much added together, which results in extreme tides (either very low or very high). Another interesting tide is a neap tide, which occurs during the moon's quarter phases. Neap tides happen when the moon and sun work in almost a right angle and virtually cancel each other out, causing the opposite of spring tides, which is very ordinary tides (the differences between high and low tide are very small and barely noticeable).
