facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, all are virtual worlds that have become known as social networking that many people are now using to communicate electronically. These sites allow them to post information about themselves; thoughts, feelings, beliefs, activities, all readily available for their online friends to view. The most popular social networking website, Facebook has over 140 million active members. teenagers create online profiles for self-expression and to document and share personal experiences. I also believe that they use the internet to seek out their own identity and to understand how they fit into the world around them. What this virtual world of social networking does not allow is the day-to-day real life interactions that provide checks and balances that affect their decision-making and personal behavior. I think that parents of today’s teenagers might have a different answer than their children.
Of course I cannot rule out the problem of the digital divide which has hindered many people from accessing the internet and partaking fully in the process of communication via these networking sites.
Information is one of the basic requisites for driving social change in communities. It keeps people updated with the current trends because being current is the currency of these days.
Now the majority of households have at least one computer and/or smartphone device. This has allowed for people to stay in touch with family, find old friends that they have lost touch with over the years and even network for their business. Without social networking alot of this may not have been possible. It gives us a platform to share our views, opinions and thoughts. It even helps in Communication skills enhancement. There are no boundaries or borders for a person to connect with other people living even in other continent.
