1875. gada 3. martā pirmoreiz tika organizēta hokeja spēle, un šī diena tiek uzskatīta par modernā hokeja dzimšanas dienu. 1877. gadā, lai spēli padarītu skatāmāku, daži Makgila (McGill) universitātes studenti ieviesa hokejā pirmos 7 noteikumus, un tajā pašā gadā nodibināja arī pirmo komandu - Makgila Universitātes hokeja klubu.[3] Kļuvusi organizētāka, spēle kļuva populāra un 1883. gadā tika iekļauta Monreālas ikgadējā Ziemas karnevālā. 1893. gadā Kanādā darbojās jau ap 100 hokeja komandām. 1888. gadā Ziemas karnevālu apmeklēja Prestonas Lords Stenlijs. Lordu ļoti sajūsmināja hokejs un viņš nosprieda, ka labākajai komandai vajadzētu tikt apbalvotai. Stenlija kauss pirmoreiz tika pasniegts amatieru komandai Kanādā un tiek pasniegts vēl aizvien, tikai tagad tā tiek pasniegta katras sezonas spēcīgākajai NHL komandai. Tas tiek uzskatīts par vērtīgāko hokeja apbalvojumu. NHL, pēc vairākām citām islaicīgi pastāvējušām Ziemeļamerikas hokeja līgām, tika dibināta 1917. gada novembrī.

Lorda Stenlija pieci dēli centās popularizēt hokeju Eiropā. 1903. gadā tika dibināta līga, kurā spēlēja 5 komandas. 1910. gadā notika pirmais Eiropas čempionāts, kurā uzvarēja Lielbritānijas hokeja izlase.
