Two measuring cylinders are added with 50 ml of water and then add Tallinn and Phenolphthalein indicator respectively to each cylinder, add 20 ml of kerosene or gasoline to both cylinder as it is less dense hence it will float on water. To each of the cylinder add a piece of sodium metal. As it passes the kerosene layer it does not show any changes but as soon as it reached the water level it reacts with water to form hydrogen gas and and sodium hydroxide.
2H20(l) + 2Na(s) → 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)
As there is change in pH it results into alkaline solution and colour change due to indicator dye, here the sodium is unable to react with water as it less dense than water hence it bounce back as and when hydrogen gas is produced.
