The internet article I chose to read was about the Weather Underground Movement. This group, originally called the Weathermen, was a group of radical protestors looking for social and political change. Originally affiliated with a peaceful group, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Weather Underground did not believe that peaceful protests were effective. They felt that violence was necessary to grab the country’s attention The Weathermen spit from the SDS, and became a violent group that some accused of terrorism. This group actually bombed the Capital building. Eventually, they became known as the Weather Underground when members had to go into hiding after a bomb, they were manufacturing accidently detonated and killed three of their members in Manhattan. At this point, they caught the attention of the FBI and were forced into hiding. The fact that I found most interesting in the article was that they took its name from a line in the Bob Dylan song “Subterranean Homesick Blues” – “you don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows”. Bob Dylan was known for writing protest songs, but I thought he aligned himself with peaceful organizations. I searched a little online, but could not find any articles describing how he felt about this radical group taking their name from his work.
