İlk kez 1890 yılında İngiltere ile İskoçya arasında oynanmıştır.
1900 yıllarında su topunun güç ve yetenek isteyen spor dalı olmasını sağlayan derin havuzlar kullanılmaya başlamıştır.
Su topu yurdumuzda 1930 yıllarında ele alınmaya başlandı.
İlk su topu maçı 1931'de açılışı aynı yıl yapılan "Büyükdere Yüzme Havuzu"'nda düzenlendi.
Bu karşılaşmalara Beykoz , BeylerBeyi , Deniz lisesi ve Galatasaray takımları katılmıştır.
1932 Yılında Fenerbahçe ve ISK su topu takımları kuruldu.
Bu spor dalı , "Yüzme , Atlama , Su topu Federasyonu"na bağlıdır.
