Sumo (相撲) adalah olahraga gulat yang memiliki peraturan cukup ketat dimana masing-masing pegulat memaksa pegulat lain keluar dari arena pertandingan yang berbentuk bulat dengan beberapa cara, bila salah satu pegulat menyentuh tanah diluar arena pertandingan dengan salah satu bagian tubuhnya maka pegulat tersebut dinyatakan kalah, berbagai cara dan teknik banyak dilakukan oleh para pegulat Sumo untuk mengeluarkan lawannya seperti mengangkat, menghindar dan semacamnya.
Olahraga asli negara Jepang ini memiliki tradisi melempar garam sebelum pertandingan berlangsung. Tradisi melempar garam ini dipercaya oleh para pegulat Sumo untuk mensucikan ring pertandingan yang berbentuk bulat tersebut, beberapa atlit Sumo terkadang pandai dalam membuat pertunjukan dari tradisi ini dengan dramatis mereka masuk ke arena pertandingan dan melempar garam ke udara. Tradisi ini memang sama seperti ritual Harae yang digunakan untuk memurnikan kuil-kuil Shinto di Jepang.
