I live in North Carolina,
close enough to the city of Charlotte to experience some city culture
while also far enough to go to really rural areas.

My family moved to North Carolina from Japan in 1957.
It was illegal for Japanese to come to the United States
by themselves at that time because of the Immigration Act of 1924,

but my grandmother had married a White American soldier
from North Carolina and got in through marriage.
(The soldier was in Japan for the Vietnam War)
I guess I am technically some kind of ハーフ
but I don't really think of myself like that.

There are hardly any Japanese in my area
so I can't even group together with a similar community if I wanted to.
(there are a few Vietnamese refugees from the Vietnam War, though)


I live in an area that is mostly Mexican.
Historically, this area had been mostly Black up until recent years.

Most of these Mexicans do not speak English
and I have had to learn some basic Spanish
to just get by in my own hometown.
I have to speak Spanish when ordering food at restaurants
or talking with retail workers.

I am currently studying at a university to be a history teacher (I am 21)
and I have to speak at least a little bit of Spanish
each time I am sent to local schools for observation/teaching.

Once, I had to teach about the American War of Independence in Spanish.
I hardly know Spanish, so the students were always laughing at me.
During this, I thought:
Why would they be the ones laughing?
They're the ones who aren't able to speak English in America!

On top of that, they did not care about American history
because they weren't Americans.
They do not respect the country they moved to.
