I live in North Carolina,
close enough to the city of Charlotte to experience some city culture
while also far enough to go to really rural areas.

My family moved to North Carolina from Japan in 1957.
It was illegal for Japanese to come to the United States
by themselves at that time because of the Immigration Act of 1924,

but my grandmother had married a White American soldier
from North Carolina and got in through marriage.
(The soldier was in Japan for the Vietnam War)
I guess I am technically some kind of ハーフ
but I don't really think of myself like that.

There are hardly any Japanese in my area
so I can't even group together with a similar community if I wanted to.
(there are a few Vietnamese refugees from the Vietnam War, though)

I live in an area that is mostly Mexican.
Historically, this area had been mostly Black up until recent years.

Most of these Mexicans do not speak English
and I have had to learn some basic Spanish
to just get by in my own hometown.
I have to speak Spanish when ordering food at restaurants
or talking with retail workers.

I am currently studying at a university to be a history teacher (I am 21)
and I have to speak at least a little bit of Spanish
each time I am sent to local schools for observation/teaching.

Once, I had to teach about the American War of Independence in Spanish.
I hardly know Spanish, so the students were always laughing at me.
During this, I thought:
Why would they be the ones laughing?
They're the ones who aren't able to speak English in America!

On top of that, they did not care about American history
because they weren't Americans.
They do not respect the country they moved to.

Being at a university is difficult as well
when you see Mexican students freely talking
about how they are illegal immigrants and are proud of it.
(most Mexicans here are immigrants and most of them are illegal)
The professors always take the side of the illegals and
ask them about the difficulties of being illegal in America.

I have to write an essay this week about the Caravan approaching the border
and I have to write about how America has a "responsibility" to take in the caravan.
In my heart, I know it'll only make more problems.
Even the Black gangs we used to worry about when I was a kid
are gone and have been replaced with Mexican gangs.

You said that you hate hearing languages other than English. I agree, especially Spanish.
But I hear Spanish on a daily basis more than English
and then I hear some students at my university speak "Spanglish".
Apparently, when two people speak the same two languages,
they will switch up the words and sentences between languages.
It just sounds like a disgusting corruption of both languages
that should never be spoken and gives me a headache.

First, they show no respect for America or for English
when they enter the country and build up a small Mexico,
but then they don't even have enough respect for Spanish, the language of their ancestors,
when they mix it together with English to form a language with no meaningful culture or history.

I love and respect my ancestors and their home country of Japan.
Even though my parents never learned Japanese,
I am working very hard to learn the language of my ancestors.
I am working very hard to preserve my family's culture
while these immigrants throw their traditions away and
are invading and eliminating American culture.

I was very disappointed when I heard Abe's new immigration policy.
For a long time, I deeply respected my ancestral country's ability
to preserve culture, language, and tradition.
But this new policy that will allow in people
from developing countries and anti-Japan countries
could very likely turn Japan into the place I live in.

I don't want to see my ancestral home
become like the country I was born in
because of massive immigration.

I visited the Netherlands this year and
was completely astonished at how much the place
had become a little Middle East.
The tour guides warned us about walking the streets at night
because there were Syrian gangs.

I don't understand why Europe, America,
and now maybe Japan are killing their own countries.
