Annika: Good afternoon Ms Jia and fellow students. Today, our group will be presenting about the structure, bonding, and physical properties of diamond.

Annika: These are some points of general information to take note of diamonds. They are an extremely rare substance formed billions of years ago, and are essentially clear, colourless crystals made up of carbon atoms. They are the hardest known natural substance, and has the highest thermal conductivity, along with the highest melting point of 4090ºC.

Winnie: Next, we will be focusing on the structure and bonding of a diamond together. Their carbon atoms are held together by covalent bonds, in which their electrons are shared between non-metal elements to achieve a stable octet arrangement in the outermost electron shell.
Annika: They are organised in a giant lattice structure, and due to these strong covalent bonds which cannot be broken easily, it makes up the rigid structure. Each carbon atom is bonded to 4 other carbon atoms, in a tetrahedral shape, which we will later on see how this explains some of diamonds’ properties.

Winnie & Annika- explain model and diagram: (brief outline of what yall can say) From this diagram, we can see that one central carbon atom is covalently bonded to 4 other carbon atoms.
