Many readers would prefer a happier, more conventional ending to the love story of Hester and Dimmesdale. Why don't we get one?
- During this time, the Puritans didn't believe in getting rewards for your sin so if the story had ended in a way where despite their sins, the two lovers stayed together, it would counter argue the beliefs and traditions that the Puritans held.
- the story had to remain historically correct so that it could highlight the way that life was run in this age
- life isn't always a fairytale and many relationships don't end up the way that we want them to so in that case, giving the story a more realistic ending that could be compared to what actual life is.
- Hawthorne also doesn't seem like the author to be stereotypical and give everyone a happy ending so it makes more sense for the story to end the way that it did.
