Ospreys live around North America, spending their breeding time mostly in Canada and the northern states of the U.S.A. They migrate to Central America though some spend their winter days around Cuba and the southernmost parts of the United States. Ospreys are primarily fish eating birds, but on certain occasions, watchers have observed ospreys eating snakes, small mammals, salamanders and even other birds. Ospreys can't dive more than three feet under water so they normally hunt in shallower waters. When hunting the osprey circles above a water source looking for movement in the water. When they spot a fish, they will hover in the air for a moment before diving to catch the fish, feet first. Ospreys live around almost any water habitat, including marshes, rivers, ponds, man made lakes, and even reefs. The osprey's nest rests on a tall thin structure near the water such as a dead tree, or a man made pole like a channel marker or telephone pole. Ospreys breed around April and May and lay up to 2-4 eggs. Usually ospreys mate for life.
