Complete Guide To The Types Of Levels Used In Surveying!

Today, in the work of land surveying or leveling, multiple kinds of levels are being used such as such as dumpy level, Y level, Cushing's level, tilting level, Cooke's reversible level, and automatic levels. Talking about the automatic or auto levels, these have become a much more common optical instrument on the construction sites. They are replacing the alternatives as they are much easier to use and faster to set up. With having a circular level, they are facilitating the leveling in a far better way.

However, not only the auto level is being used for leveling. Others are also raising the demands in the market. In order to perform the leveling, there are some level instruments required so that the object can be read with complete focus. Today, the technology introduced in surveying and so many easy measuring instruments are designed, on which we will focus below.

Different Types of Levels for Levelling In Surveying:

Dumpy Level:

It is the most common instrument, which is used in the leveling. In this instrument, the telescope is actually restricted against the movement in its horizontal plane and the telescope is fixed to its support. Also, a bubble tube is also provided on the top of the telescope. However, the leading head can be easily rotated in a horizontal plane with the telescope. The internal telescope is actually an internal focusing telescope. It has a metal tube that contains four major parts as mentioned below:
● Objective lens
● Negative lens
● Diaphragm
● Eye-piece

Automatic Level:

This one is also like the dumpy level. The telescope is fixed to its supports. For approximate leveling, the circular spirit can be attached to the side of the telescope. Also, the compensator or the stabilizer is attached inside the telescope for more accurate leveling, which can help the instrument for leveling automatically. It incorporates two fixed prisms. It is capable of developing an optical path between the eyepiece and the objectives.

This results in an optical system to swing into an exact position of the line of sign automatically due to the action of the gravity. However, it should be checked before the procedure of leveling. Move the foot screws slightly if the leveling staff reading remains constant to the check the compensator. After this, the compensator is just perfect. If it is not constant, tap the telescope gently for freeing the compensator. The auto level is also called self-adjusting levels.

Objective Lens

These should be made as the combination of crown and flint glass. Some of the defects such as spherical aberration and chromatic aberration can be easily deleted. There is a thin layer coating, having a smaller refractive index than glass is delivered on the objective lens in order to minimize the loss because of the reflection.

Cooke’s Reversible Level

This is a combination of the dumpy and Y level. In Cooke's reversible level, the telescope can be reversed without any rotation the instrument. The collimation mistakes can also be deleted in this due to the bubble left and bubble right reading of the telescope.
