At long last, Anthem is playable for anyone who pre-orders or snags a code. The demo (not a “beta”) is live and has suffered from some pretty severe server problems, but I’ve managed to play a halfway decent amount of it, plus I had some time with it during the closed alpha which was NDA-ed at the time.
Obviously, there’s going to be a ton more to Anthem at launch than what we’re seeing here, but the demo is meant to give you a general sense of the game. And a general sense, I have, at this point, I think. Usually during these early previews I try to give some coherent first impressions, so here’s what I think is the good, the bad and the in-between of Anthem so far.

Mo-cap
Forever haunted by the horrifying faces of Mass Effect Andromeda, it’s clear BioWare was never going to let that happen again. The mo-cap work done with the NPCs is Fort Tarsis is very good, and the way conversations are set up all the characters to move around in more natural ways than we usually see in these kinds of games. It still does strikes me as kind of weird that Fort Tarsis is entirely in first person when the game itself is third person, and people endlessly talking at a camera, ie. your face, is not my favorite form of storytelling, but more on that later.
Build Synergy
This isn’t something you can do a ton of in the demo from what I’ve seen, but I have seen a lot of “endgame” stuff that reveals just how crazy you can get with Diablo-style PvE builds that stack bonuses and synergies on top of each other, and this is exactly the kind of thing I’m looking for in a looter. I am very excited to try and make a lot of cool builds using this system, as truly great synergy is something most of these games, even Diablo, struggled to implement for months or even years after launch, and it seems like Anthem might get it right away.
