Returning Applicant Questions
1. In 300 words or less, please share how you personally contributed to the growth of the Spirit of Georgetown Residential Academy. Please provide specific examples of your involvement and engagement in the Academy.

1. If invited to return to the Spirit of Georgetown Residential Academy, what steps would you take to role model involvement in the Academy for new members?

If invited to return, I would utilize opportunities that make the Residential Academy unique, such as the Academy Cohort and weekly reflections to help role model involvement for new members. As someone who was privileged enough to attend a selective public high school with strong academics and students from a variety of backgrounds, I learned the importance of academic excellence, racial and religious tolerance, and giving back to the community. As a result, community outreach and working with underprivileged people from all backgrounds has become an integral part of who I am today. Therefore, one step I would take to model involvement in the Academy would be to design a community-based learning seminar that highlights the Jesuit tenet of People for Others. The seminar would be service-learning based, within which each cohort would identify and partner with a Washington, D.C. based organization that works with disadvantaged and underserved individuals or groups. By becoming actively involved in programs such as the Capital Partners for Education, which equips low-income high school and college students from the Washington, D.C. area with college and career skills through one-on-one peer mentoring, we able to build close relationships with those who are less fortunate while reflecting on the privilege we have to attend Georgetown.

1. In 300 words or less, describe how living in a community focused on the Jesuit values of Georgetown impacted your growth and development as a student.

In my experience, living in the Residential Academy’s has undoubtedly opened my mind and enriched my college experience. As someone who was selected to live on the Academy’s Interreligious floor, I gained a stronger appreciation and awareness for the diverse group of students with whom I interacted on a daily basis.

* Academic excellence
* Community in diversity
* Inter religious understanding

If invited to live in the Residential Academy, I would contribute to the community through my dedication to promoting diversity. I would utilize unique opportunities such as the Academy Cohort and weekly reflections to help others become culturally competent. By taking the time to learn about the various cultures, religions, and backgrounds of our peers and sharing our personal customs and practices, we can effectively cultivate the tenets of interreligious understanding and community in diversity within our daily lives. Additionally, I would use the diverse, close-knit community of the Residential Academy as a springboard to implement a Diversity Peer Educator (DPE) program. This is a program that has been successfully implemented in many top universities nationwide and would enhance cultural awareness among all communities at Georgetown. DPEs are student members that would assist in the creation of a safe community for students of all backgrounds and strengthen their respective living-learning environments by organizing cultural, social, personal, and educational enrichment programs. They would lead trainings, present lectures and workshops around issues of diversity and inclusion in addition to serving as ambassadors to the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity & Affirmative Action. The Residential Academy’s dialogue series would be a perfect opportunity for DPEs to lead  students in engaging conversations that explore sensitive areas such as identity, sexuality, belonging, diversity. Here, students would be able to ask questions, raise concerns, and learn from each other’s distinctive experiences. I believe that if I was accepted into the Residential Academy, I would help to foster a community where we celebrate the mutual and distinct traits that make us all Hoyas.

1A5909. From a young age, I learned the importance of racial and religious tolerance from my great-grandfather and his experiences as a prisoner in Auschwitz at 18. After his release in 1945, he spent his life advocating for tolerance and eventually became one of the founders of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He passed on the lesson that strength lies in our differences, not in our similarities. His story and life’s work have inspired me to actively promote the tenet of diversity in my community.
I was privileged to attend a selective public high school with strong academics and students from a variety of backgrounds. Being with a diverse group of students opened my mind and undoubtedly made my high school experience richer. During my four years, I was involved with Student Diversity Initiative, a school organization that works closely with the admissions office to ensure people from all backgrounds have equal access to our school. As president of this organization, I logged over 250 hours of community outreach, tutored, and held teleconferences at underrepresented middle schools to spark interest in STEM and encourage students to apply. To make information about our school more available to underprivileged students, I created a video and a website (http://whytj.weebly.com) to effectively encapsulated our high school culture. I accompanied admissions officers to schools to give presentations and answer questions from prospective students and their parents.
If invited to join the Academy, I would challenge my peers to expand their horizons by helping them gain an appreciation and awareness for others and their diverse backgrounds. I would share my experiences and encourage others to get involved and make an impact in their community. Most importantly, I would take advantage of my Academy Cohort to spread my great-grandfather’s story and message because diversity matters.
