he was the youngest of seven children and his parents did not have much money
began to play professionally after he graduated when he played for the cangrejeros of Santurce in Puerto Rico
in February, 1954, the Brooklyn Dodgers selected him to play in the minor leagues
Roberto was not given an official contract, meaning he was paid very little despite being a phenomenal player
in June of 1954, Clyde Sukeforth, noticed Clemente's talent and offered him a contract to play for the Pittsburg pirates
that same year, Roberto and his brother returned to Puerto Rico to visit a sick relative and Roberto was later involved in a drunk-driver accident, through which he suffered severe back injuries
Luis, the person whom Roberto wished to visit, died right after the accident
in 1955, the Pirates officially recruited Roberto to play in the major leagues ---> during this time, Roberto was extremely frustrated with the racial prejudice throughout the nation at the time
During his first year with the Pirates, Roberto couldn't play much because of his back injury
his batting average was .357 and on the 25 of July in 1956, Clemente was the first player in major league history to bat a "grand slam" inside the park to win a game
the pirates won the world cup in 1960 with Clemente's help --> in their game against the yankees, clemente had 9 hits, 3 RBIs and a batting average of .310
recieved 23 honors along with the golden glove award --> won awards 11 consecutive times
met Vera Zabala in 1964 while in Puerto Rico --> married on the 14 of november and had three children (roberto, Luis, and Roberto Enrique)
Was inspired by civil rights movement (wanted black players to receive fair salaries, met with Martin Luther King Junior, felt that his fame obligated him to stand in affirmation of social justice)
Roberto visited children hospitals and donated large amounts of money to charitable foundations
Clemente died on December 31, 1972 while he was on a plane headed for Managua, Nicaragua (there was an earthquake there and he felt that he needed to help the survivors) --> Roberto was seven when this happened
After his death, Vera established a sports center in Carolina in his name (offered rehabilitation, art programs, etc.) --> the city is closed now
