1. SooC is extremely important - Never get into the complete mindset of "Ah, I will fix it in processing. Obviously, you still will do it, but avoid that mindset during the shoot.
2. Every subject is different - fine tune your work methods and behavior based on that.
3. Location is not that important - I have gotten some of my best pictures sitting the living room. It's how you use the location.
4. Find your lenses - Even though I will always favor a 50mm lens, different lenses give you different perspectives, background separation and more.
5. Always be punctual - Try to be early if possible and scan the location and plan out a few angles and shots.
6. Smile and talk - Conversations are really helpful to build a rapport quickly and get better shots.
7. Be professional no matter what - There will be shoots where the subject and you will connect really well and become pretty friendly very soon, but still KEEP IT PROFESSIONAL.
8. Direct and get directed - Tell the subject what you think can be improved and vice versa
9. Don't get pushed around - Don't want to generalize but sometimes people get pushed around and get treated badly by their subjects (and vice versa). Respect and get respected.
10. Aim higher - Always make sure you are getting better and seeing changes in your work during the shoot. Trust me, you will see changes not only in your work and outcomes but in your personality as well.
