Virginia Woolf was born in 1882 and died in 1941. She was an English novelist and essayist regarded as one of the fare most modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. Her father Leslie Stephan was an eminent Victorian man of letters. She grew up in a literary and intellectual atmosphere with free access to her father’s library so she improved herself a lot. Her childhood experiences of the death of her mother when she was thirteen and sexual abuse from her stepbrothers led to depression. The Second World War increased her anxiety and fears. After rewriting drafts of her suicide note. She put rocks into her pockets and drowned herself in the River Ouse. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society. In 1904 she moved to Bloomsbury and became a member of the Bloomsbury Group. This meant the rejection of traditional morality and artistic convention. The group was famous for being one of the first literary groups that openly supported gay rights, women in the arts, pacifism, uninhibited sexuality and many other social and political issues. Virginia Woolf wrote many books including 10 novels and a number of nonfiction books. Many of these books became and remain best-sellers and have cemented Woolf’s reputation as one of the great writers of the 20th century. Modernism was a cultural movement of the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. It changed art, literature, music, architecture and drama. Modernism rejected tradition. It was interested in new ways of doing old things. Just like Virginia Woolf did. She best known as one of the great experimental novelist during the modernist period. Virginia's main aim to give voice to the complex inner world of feeling and memory. Virginia Woolf is one of the leading figures of feminism.
Woolf’s novels were written with the stream-of-consciousness literary technique which focuses more on the character’s inner thoughts than on the plot. She is a feminist writer and includes the themes of androgyny, woman. Let's talk about some of the novels of Virginia Woolf. The Voyage Out is Woolf’s first novel and it tells the story of a young woman’s journey of self-discovery on her father’s ship in South American. The novel was published on March 26, 1915. Jacob’s Room is a novel that explores the concept of emptiness and loss. The story is about the life of a young man named Jacob but it is told through the perspectives of the women in Jacob’s life. The novel was published on October 26, 1922. Mrs. Dalloway is probably Woolf’s most well-known novel. The story is about a day in the life of its main character, Clarissa Dalloway, as she prepares for a party she is hosting that evening. Prominent themes in the novel include mental illness, feminism and homosexuality. The novel was published on May 14, 1925. To the Lighthouse tells the story of the Ramsay family’s trip to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The novel is semi-autobiographical and was inspired by the Stephen family trips to Cornwall when Woolf was a child. The novel was published on May 5, 1927. Orlando is the story follows a poet as he changes gender and lives for centuries, often meeting famous people in English literature. The book is considered a feminist classic and is often cited in transgender studies. The novel was published on October 11, 1928. A Room of One’s Own is an extended essay that discusses many feminist issues, such as women’s lack of educational opportunities and their economic and social dependence on men. The book, published on October 24, 1929, is considered a feminist classic.
