Back in the time of the first online social networks, way before Netlog.com, there was a Belgian network called www.redbox.be later acquired by Netlog or did it become Netlog, I'm not completely sure...
Anyway, on Redbox.be you had the right to upload pictures and the first picture you uploaded was visible rigth away, but for any additional picture, you had to pay one euro via sending a SMS code (or at least someone had to do it) ...
Like I was really curious, I decided to give it a try with an at random choosen profile picture (of a girl) and like I had a prepaid phone card I estimated the risk was really minimal so I just went for it... it worked seamlessly and a minute later the picture was visible ...
Netlog.com didn't preserve this feature, which means their payment model is quite different, but I really think the idea of paying by SMS was a great idea and still is.
I would consider to pay for great content on TheGuardian.com when offered this possibility instead of those offered right now, because I still consider all those option to risky, even anno 2018, or even more anno 2018.
