Book title- Monsters of Men
Author- Patrick Ness
About the author-
Born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, The United States, January 01, 1971
Patrick Ness, an award-winning novelist, has written for England’s Radio 4 and Sunday Telegraph and is a literary critic for The Guardian. He has written many books, including the Chaos Walking Trilogy, The Crash of Hennington, Topics About Which I Know Nothing, and A Monster Calls.
He has won numerous awards, including the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, the Booktrust Teenage Prize, and the Costa Children’s Book Award. Born in Virginia, he currently lives in London.
Book cover-
I think the book cover suits the book as it has three circles in the front, relating to the main character's mantra, ‘I am the circle and the circle is me’, to hide his ‘Noise’, his secrets and to focus on his destiny. It is also covered with lots of words/scribbles which indicate noise, which is just everybody’s thoughts.
Genre-
Science Fiction-
Fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.
Elements-
Setting-
Planet- ‘New World’, Place- New Prentisstown
Character analysis-
Todd Hewitt- (Protagonist)
A thirteen year old child who has suffered great loss and is affected by the ‘Noise’ and is known as ‘The Boy Who Can’t Kill’ and has to face a lot of moral decisions.
Viola Eade- (Protagonist)
A girl who is Todd’s friend and wants to make peace with the spackle and is quite intelligent.
Mayor-
A greedy mastermind who wants to take over the world.
1017-
A Spackle who is also known as The Return and is wanting revenge.
Spackle-
A species on the planet New World and they act as one entity.
Conflict-
‘Noise’ is found in every male on New World, which is something that reveals what everyone is thinking. The Mayor teaches Todd how to control his Noise and Todd faces an internal conflict of controlling his and others Noise or not. Also, the men and Spackle are on war with each other.
Climax-
When the Mayor tries to kill Todd and all the Spackle.
Solution/Ending-
The Mayor has been defeated and there is peace between the humans and Spackle, while Todd is “killed” by 1017.
Experience-
I learnt about what happens during a war, how does power manipulate you, what conflicts do people face and this book has a deep meaning with a gripping storyline, so I never felt bored and overall, I found this book worth reading.
Quotes-
“War makes monsters of men”
“My heart is broken, broken in a way that will never be healed, broken in a way that feels like it’s going to kill me, too, right here on this stupid, freezing beach”
“What a sad thing men are. Can't do nothing good without being so weak we have to mess it up. Can't build something up without tearing it down.”
“To say you have no choice is to relieve yourself of responsibility.”
I AM THE CIRCLE AND THE CIRCLE IS ME.
MYP Elements-
GC-
Globalization and Sustainability- as the battle between the people of New Prentisstown, the Hilltop and Spackle fought for control of the land and in the end they learned how to sustain themselves by being together through peace.
KC-
Perspective- as the book was written from the point of views of Todd, Viola and 1017 and focused on what was right from both the Land and Clearing’s perspectives.
RC-
Character- the character’s behaviour mattered a lot.
Point Of View- same as perspective.
Context- a lot of backstory was involved, including past wars and the Mayor’s actions.
LP-
The learner profile showcased by me was ‘Open-Minded’ as while reading the book I kept in mind what was ethically correct from the viewpoints of different people and accepted both the Land’s and Clearing’s ideas.
Rating-
I would give this book a 4.5/5 as the whole story was nice and it was the PERFECT ending to the Chaos Walking trilogy with brilliantly described events and a gripping plot. The only thing that I did not like was Todd dying and then becoming unconscious in the end, leaving a very big cliffhanger there.
