Chapter 3

1. Holden means that things from Hollywood are just for entertainment, so by selling out creative work for money, in Holden's mind D.B. is "being a prostitute."

2. Ackley is a student who lives next door to Holden. He is irritating to Holden and always barges in on him. He also has bad hygiene.

3. Ackley never sits down in a chair, he comes into rooms when he's not invited, he cuts his nails on the floor, he doesn't brush his teeth, etc.

Chapter 4

1. Stradlater is Holden's roommate. He always looks alright but is a slob in the way he gets clean, like how his razor was extremely rusty. He has a good amount of facial hair.

2. He is trying to say that people base why others are better at something than they are on technical things, like the basketball players build, instead of actual talent/skill.

3. Holden used to date Jane, and he was worried about her because he knows that Stradlater date rapes.

Chapter 5

1. Allie is Holden's brother who died recently of leukemia, so the baseball mitt is a very special memory of him.
2. The night allie died, holden went crazy and broke all the windows in the garage

Character analysis --------------------------------

Chapter 3 - 4 it shows how Holden interacts with others. Holden hates “phonies” people whose behavior changes or hides their inner feelings. His brother D. B. also mentions his displeasure by accepting a large paycheck to write for the movies. Holden considers the movies to be the phoniest of the phony and emphasizes throughout the book the hate he has for Hollywood.

One of his ways to present was his negative but somewhat compassionate view of humanity. He chose to do this by writing in the persona of an exceptionally intelligent sixteen-year-old boy who was particularly concerned about the subject because he was entering adulthood himself and could see how adults characters and values were distorted by the need to survive.

I think Salinger is trying to show the reader coming of age and how teens grow up and have different phases. He also explains what they might be going through or thinking. He just shows the other side of the book. What you see on the outside is not what always may be going on in the inside.

Allie's death set Holden's life in motion towards the paths that he chose. He’s in school and is a loner which is bad in the environment he is in since you see everyone else with someone and see how your the only one alone. You then judge yourself based on what others are doing or think about you.

Holden's attitude is a big problem in his life because he does not like change. He thinks whatever he thinks is true and doesn’t accept criticism. I think that if you are that way you will never grow or progress. Life is all about learning and if Holden keep doing what he is currently doing he will never progress.
