Persona adalah 'role' alias peran. Persona itu sendiri berasal dari bahasa latin 'persona' yang artinya adalah topeng. Dari bahasa kuno Entruscan 'phersu' atau bahasa Yunani 'πρόσωπον (prosōpon)' yang juga berarti topeng.
Persona adalah 'topeng' yang dibuat oleh seseorang tersebut untuk memberikan kesan kepribadian tertentu pada sekitar, atau menyembunyikan sifat asli orang tersebut dari dunia. itu tadi definisi persona menurut ilmu manusia biasa, kaidah psikologi.
P-users mengartikan persona/shadow adalah makhluk yang muncul dari kegelapan yang bersemayam di setiap manusia. Kegelapan ini akan menjadi Persona yang jahat (shadow) jika si pemilik kegelapan tidak bisa menerima semua kekurangan yang dimilikinya. Jika manusia tersebut bisa menerima, maka shadow tersebut akan mengalami shift menjadi persona.
Persona bisa sangat mirip dengan penggunanya. Contoh Arisato Minato dengan orpheus. Minato gemar mendengarkan musik dan orpheus adalah persona yang membawa alat musik dipunggungnya(?)
