5.6 The Boston Tea Party Joshua Segal
In 1773, a new law called the Tea Act prompted more protests. One of them was the incident that became known as the Boston Tea Party. The Tea act was started by The Brittish East India company and was supposed to pay for the debt of the war. The tax lowered the price of tea meaning even taxed Brittish Tea was less expensive than normal Dutch tea. The Colonists did not like this and considered it Tyranny with their slogan as "No taxation without Representation" When the Brittish pulled in the port with more ships the Colonists used it as an opportunity to attack. 50 men dressed as Mohawk Indians boarded the three ships and dumped out over 90,000 tons of Tea.
5.7 The Intolerable Acts
The English were shocked at the result of the Boston Tea party and as a result, they decided to punish Massachusetts. To do this They inforced the Intolerable Acts. The first law closed Boston Harbor to all shipping until the ruined tea was paid for. The second law placed the government of Massachusetts firmly under British control. Colonists in Massachusetts could not even hold a town meeting without the colonial governor's permission. The third law said that British soldiers who were accused of murder would be tried in England, not in the colonies. Finally, more troops were sent to Boston to enforce the new laws.
5.8 Lexington and Concord
The intolerable acts had caused the colonies to unite, the colonists baraded the king with complaints but instead of listening, he decided to attack his colonies to get revenge. King Geoge ordered 700 of his best troops to march to Concord to sneak attack. Trying to avoid being caught they marched in the middle of the night but were intercepted by the colonist's spy. The spy told everyone and the new from Lexington spread to a town named Concord.Their Brittish soldiers massacred the colonists leaving 8 of them dead. While looking for guns and supplies in Concord the Colonists massacred the Brittish killing all of them in site. This ended up being a Great victory for the colonists.
