Choose a notebook that assists in notetaking. Loose-leaf notebooks are particularly good for taking notes because they permit you to go back later and change the order of the pages or add additional material in the appropriate spot. But whatever kind of notebook you use, use only one side of the page for writing: keep one side free of notes. There may be times when you're studying when you'll want to spread your notes in front of you, and it's much easier if no material is written on the backs of the pages.
Consider the benefits of taking your textbook to class. It's generally a good idea to take your textbook to class, unless your instructor advises you otherwise. Sometimes instructors will refer to information contained in it, and sometimes it's useful to have it handy to clarify information that is being discussed. You can also use it to look up key terms that may momentarily escape you. But don't, under any circumstances, use class time as an opportunity to read the textbook!
Consider the pros and cons of using a laptop computer to take notes in class. There are several advantages: Legibility problems are avoided, and it's easy to go back and revise or add material after you've taken the notes.
There are also potential pitfalls. You may end up keyboarding more and thinking less. Or you may succumb to the temptation to check your e-mail or instant message your friends, rather than listening to your instructor.
Because of their drawbacks, some instructors have strong feelings against the use of laptops in their class. Consequently, be sure to ask for permission before using your laptop to take notes.
