Countries and Fiefs of the Western Realms
>The Three Classes: Lords (castles) - knights, clergy, and magicians (manors) - commoners (houses)
> League = 3 miles
> Average, actual size of various fiefs can change rather drastically.
> A fief has three classifications: the shires [manors considered safe], the interior [manors within fiefs considered dangerous], the frontier [manors on the border considered dangerous].
> Dangerous fiefs are 'protected' by its count/baron. Along support troops from the sovereign/magnates.
>The sovereign and powerful lords, magnates, would have small standing armies to deal with various threats.
> Manors contain 300 people average, with a knight and around 20 retainers.
> A Knight would lead a Company to muster. Around 5 knights, 5 yeomen, 10 men-at-arms, and a levy.
1. A travel Hex is an average day's travel on easy terrain vertex to vertex. 30 miles vertex to vertex. 600 miles area. Various encounters should occur every 1 to 10 leagues(3 miles), thus 10 to 1 a day.
1. a. A travel Hex has 10 Baronies. 5 travel Hexes make a County. 20 travel Hexes make a Duchy
2. a. Average manor: 2 miles vertex to vertex, 3 miles area. 1 knight + 20 soldiers.
b. Average Barony: 10 miles vertex to vertex, 60 miles area. 20 manors. 20 knights + 400 soldiers
c. Average County: 68 miles vertex to vertex, 3,000 miles area. 50 Baronies, 1000 manors. 50 Barons + 1000 knights + 20,000 soldiers.
d. Average Duchy: 136 miles vertex to vertex, 12,000 miles area. 4 Counties, 200 Baronies, 4000 manors. 4 Counts + 400 Barons + 8,000 knights + 160,000 soldiers.
e. Kingdoms are rated by the number of duchies, thus variable.
f. Empires are rated by the number of kingdoms, thus variable.
