Content-

Book title- Turtles All The Way Down
Author- John Green
Author-
John Michael Green was born on August 24, 1977, to Mike and Sydney Green in Indianapolis. He received his early education from Lake Highland Preparatory School and Indian Springs School. His experience of school was similar to other social outcasts who get bullied by arrogant people. He earned double graduation degrees in English and Religious Studies from Kenyon College. He is an American author, vlogger, writer, producer, editor, and educator. He won the 2006 Printz Award for his debut novel, Looking for Alaska, and his sixth novel, The Fault in Our Stars, debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list in January 2012. The 2014 film adaptation opened at number one at the box office. In 2014, Green was included in Time magazine's list of The 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Book cover-
I think the the author chose this cover because this has a never ending, ever tightening spiral, which denotes the book’s main theme perfectly, as this book is based on anxiety and based on the life of a girl who thinks about things a lot.
Genre-
Realistic Fiction-
Realistic fiction is a genre in which what is happening could happen in real life, but has not or is not public.
Elements-
Setting-
Indianapolis
Character analysis-
Aza Holmes-
The protagonist of the story who also happens to be a 16 year old girl suffering from anxiety and OCD with an existential crisis suggesting whether she is real or not, while also fearing bacteria.
Daisy-
Aza’s best friend who loves money and is quite bold.
Davis Prickett, Jr.-
A person who thinks about life and is the son of a rich business who has been lost and does not have a mother.
Conflict-
Aza suffers from severe anxiety and Davis’s dad has disappeared, with prize money for finding him.
Climax-
When Davis’s dad’s body is found inside a drainage system, leaving all of his money to his pet tuatara.
Solution/ending-
Davis moves to a new place and he and Aza say goodbye.
Experience-
I felt as if this was something that could easily have happened in real life, and I learned about anxiety and how we have to deal with life, like Davis’s dad giving all his money to his pet and Aza being born with anxiety about her being real. This also pushed a few questions in my mind, like what is MY never ending spiral and are any of us, US, as reflected in Aza’s mind. To add to that, the whole book was beautifully written with proper descriptions and plots.
Quotes-
“You're both the fire and the water that extinguishes it. You're the narrator, the protagonist, and the sidekick. You're the storyteller and the story told. You are somebody's something, but you are also your you.”
“I is the hardest word to define.”
“Break hearts, not promises.”
“Nobody gets anybody else, not really. We're all stuck inside ourselves.”
“The problem with happy endings, I said, is that they're either not really happy, or not really endings, you know? In real life, some things get better and some things get worse. And then eventually you die.”
“The thing about a spiral is, if you follow it inward, it never actually ends. It just keeps tightening, infinitely.”
“It’s getting sucked into a whirlpool that shrinks and shrinks and shrinks your world until you’re just spinning without moving, stuck inside a prison cell that is exactly the size of you, until eventually you realize that you’re not actually in the prison cell. You are the prison cell.”
“The world is resting on a turtle, and that turtle is being supported by another turtle, and it is turtles all the way down”
MYP Elements-
GC-
Identities and Relationships- Aza is falling out with her friend Daisy, and her anxiety makes her who she is. Davis is also left with no parents, only to meet Aza, who he falls in love with.
KC-
Relationships- Bonds break and strengthen in this story.
RC-
Context- This story features a lot of backstory, like Aza’s anxiety for her behavior and Davis’s relationship with his parents.
LP-
I showcased the LP reflective while reading this book as I reflected what it would feel like to be Aza, with OCD and losing friends.
Rating-
I would rate this book a 4/5 as this relates to real life, to real people, by talking about anxiety and other problems that people face from a everyday teen’s perspective through beautiful writing, as always, by John Green.
