The brain has four basic parts:
the brain stem: controls automatic and reflex actions, like breathing, digestion, and blinking.
cerebellum: helps to coordinate movements and controls balance and posture.
limbic system: primarily responsible for processing emotions
cerebral cortex: processes conscious actions such as thinking, sensing, and reasoning.
frontal lobes: control thinking, planning, judgment, problem-solving, and other high-order mental activities, as well as some muscle movement. This area of the brain does not finish developing until adolescence.
temporal lobes: responsible for the ability to hear, and to process and use language.
parietal lobes: are responsible for the perception of touch, pain, taste, spacial perception, and body orientation. These lobes integrate visual information with sensations to help us make sense of the world. occipital lobes: process visual information.
The brain is made up of special cells called neurons, which communicate with each other through electrical signals. dendrite from one neuron meets an axon from another neuron is called the synapse. Chemicals in these spaces help to control whether a signal received by one neuron is passed to another.
Neurons are formed through a process called neurogenesis. After the neurons are formed, they move to different parts of the brain; this is called migration
Synaptogenesis creates the synapses - or tiny gaps - between neurons that help them to communicate with one another.
myelination, the axons are covered with a fatty coating that protects the cells and increases efficiency. Finally, pruning eliminates connections that are rarely used, making more space for important networks to develop.
