About her:
Kanji is a mysterious young woman who was a mute for several years, only recently (in her late teens) verbally communicating again, leaving her with a quiet voice. Regardless of her sensitive vocal chords, she has a domineering nature to herself, which extends even through her soft tone.
She doesn't reveal anything of her background, down to her last name. No one is sure where she comes from or even why she was scouted.
Unknown to her classmates, Kanji guards the gate to a withered garden that tangles around an abandoned black palace. Nothing comes in or gets out.

Kanji's True Self:
Truly, Kanji is dead. She died hundreds of years ago.
The girl was a naive, mute maid, one of dozens of servants. She fell deeply in love with the princess, but knew she would never be able to have her hand in marriage. Princess Mizuki fell ill before her wedding ceremony to a distant prince. Kanji was designated to care for her. Before Mizuki dies, she asks for Kanji's hand and slips her own wedding ring onto it, telling her to live for her. The princess proceeds to press her lips against the maid's hand. Kanji kisses Mizuki deeply and professes her love, and as she waits for a response, she realizes that Mizuki is already gone. The girl hadn't lived to feel the true love Kanji held for her.
Before Mizuki's burial, Kanji wanders into the kitchen, numb with grief, and in an impulsive lust for freedom- and to hold Mizuki again, she lays her head in the gas oven, letting herself die via carbon monoxide poison.
She is the Ultimate Poltergeist.
