Did you know that oil is formed from the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago in a water environment before the dinosaurs and that it's a fossil fuel. Over millions of years, the remains of these animals and plants were covered by layers of sand and dirt. Heat and pressure from these layers turn the remains into what we today call oil. The word "petroleum" means "rock oil" or "oil from the earth." Oil is used for heating and transportation.
Most of the oil extracted today has been formed from prehistoric organisms whose remains settled at the bottoms of oceans and lakes millions of years ago. As layers of sediment covered them, the pressure on them increased which in turn increased the temperature. This process changed their chemical composition, eventually transforming them into oil. Oil is very important to use because we need ans use it a lot. Oil can be turned into many different kinds of fuels!
