WK 2 - Du Gay

According to Du Gay, economic and cultural aspects of globalisation are interrelated. Economic production and the exploitation of markets now exist on a global scale, largely due to the creation of new information and communication technologies. On an operational level, organisations are able to work in real time, allowing them to distribute goods more efficiently through more advanced delivery systems, monitor quality and efficiency through information technology, and process transactions instantaneously.

Beyond physical goods, information and media services are becoming increasingly more profitable as they are borderless through the use of high-speed internet and gargantuan data collection. As Du Gay notes, "information becomes the critical raw material". Organisations turn to other organisations seeking information that will provide valuable insights into their audiences and their respective behavioural patterns. Consumers seek information and media services for personal use and entertainment. There is an endless stream of information presented to us which facilitates cultural globalisation. In the space of a few minutes I, a consumer, can receive real-time updates of news from Japan while watching Facebook Live videos from a tech-savvy Australian business, and peruse the catalogue of an American retailer while listening to K-Pop. This is certainly creating economic opportunities for these international companies and industries while also increasing my involvement in global culture.
