Imagine waking up in a strange place every single day. It could be a shelter, a public bathroom, a park, a playground, some public bleachers, an abandoned building, or maybe on a bench if none of the others are available. I get up and put my half ripped backpack on or pick up whatever bag I have to carry your stuff in, and I just start walking. I don’t really have anywhere special to go, but I just want people to think I do, so I just walk around the local neighbourhood minding my own business. Along the way I ask people if they have any cash on them, I make up a story or just shake your cup, normally i get abuse but im used to it. I might get a few pounds so I go to McDonald’s or something and get a burger off the saver menu and maybe a drink, if it’s not too expensive, then I save the rest of the cash for later.
After I’ve finished your meal, I start walking again. I might go to a store like bargain booze and just look around, making it look like Im are going to buy something but really Im just trying to kill time. After just looking around I might ask if there is a job available. If there is, I pick up an application and go on my way. I do the same thing at a bunch of other stores, just trying to make the day go by faster while trying to find some employment opportunities at the same time. I look for a quiet park to just sit down and rest for a while, I go lay down under a tree and take a nap for a couple of hours because im so exhausted from walking around town so much, my feet are throbbing.
I wake up and realize that if you don’t hurry you’re not going to get a room at the nearby shelter.
I get a bite to eat and go sit down on one of the old stained couches that they have there, and I rest my feet some more. I watch some guys play cards or checkers, just trying not to get bored, trying to keep myself from thinking about how bad my situation might be, and trying to make it seem like a normal day in the life of an average person. I close MY eyes and rest a little longer until it’s time to go to my room and actually get some real sleep.
I get to your room, where there is a used bed, a broken chair, and a wooden table with a light. It is not the best place to be in the world, but i am grateful. I lie down on my bed and just look up at the ceiling, thinking about how tomorrow might be better. Eventually someone walks down the hall saying, “Lights out everybody!” So I get down on my knees and say a little prayer, thanking God for helpingme get through the day and asking him to help me get through tomorrow. To help me find a job, and eventually a place to call your own.
